DESCRIPTION

Husband and wife team Hugh & Claudia Brownstone offer a three day experience in New York City where you will grow your street photography skills in one of the most iconic settings for this genre of photography anywhere in the world.

And have a blast doing it.

We’ll delve into the history of street photography; go broad and deep on gear choices and techniques; teach you how to expose and compose effectively; perhaps even challenge you on the meaning of your work and help you refine or develop your unique photographic “voice.”

But most importantly: we’ll get you on the streets of New York with like-minded photographers!

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTORS

Hugh.jpeg

Hugh is a writer, photographer, filmmaker and YouTuber. With his wife Claudia, he produces the YouTube channel Three Blind Men & An Elephant. There are more than 300 videos on gear & conversations with people like legendary Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt; Director of the Henrí Cartier-Bresson Foundation Agnès Sire; ICP Executive Director Mark Lubell; Blackmagic Americas President Dan May; Cooke Optics Chairman Les Zellan; and Etheleen Staley, co-founder of Staley-Wise Gallery.

He has written extensively for planet5D, Luminous Landscape and DIY Photography. In addition to his YouTube channel, you’ll find his videos at The Valuable Friends. You can find him on Instagram @hughbrownstone.

Hugh fell in love with photography the moment he held a Kodachrome slide up to the light for the very first time. He built his first darkroom by the age of 12; worked in a camera store by the age of 14; ran a summer camp photography program by 16; taught a section in Cornell’s Psychology department (“The Interface between Psychology and Photography”) by 21.

His love for and knowledge of the art are clear; his enthusiasm, infectious.

Claudia is the other half of the husband and wife team that is Three Blind Men & An Elephant. She’s a photographer, gimbal operator, camera operator, audio tech, location scout, and often the co-director or co-producer of Three Blind Men & An Elephant productions. And that’s in her spare time.

She holds the record for lone gimbal operator walking backwards through the lower East Side of New York (40 minutes) as well as the record for continuous recording of a Photokina interview hand-held without moving (11 minutes).

Her favorite photography moment of all time? The moment @ElliottErwitt “liked” her Instagram post of a photograph she took, inspired by his work. If you’ve read this far, you’ve already seen a cropped version of it above. You can find her on Instagram @sophieparker39

Location

Our goal is to hold our workshops once again at the lovely Hasselblad New York Experience Studio in NoHo, and our hotel recommendations are predicated on that general vicinity. With the continuing uncertainty around COVID-19, however, final venue details are to be confirmed. We are delighted that Hasselblad is once again on board as a sponsor — and as excited and hopeful about hosting as we are.

Stay tuned!

PRICING

$1,750

Space is limited, so we encourage you to sign up early. It is likely, however, that we won’t be able to confirm the venue until our attendees’ home countries (as well as our own, here in the U.S.) re-establish normal travel protocols.

Early Bird & Other Specials:

  • $1,650 if you book more than 90 days in advance ($100 off): discount will be applied automatically at checkout.

  • $1,500 for attendees of either of our previous workshops ($250 off); we will send you the discount code when you email us. This cannot be combined with other discounts.

  • Our PRIMARY HOTEL is the Moxy East Village. We’re especially impressed with their COVID-19 precautions, and it promises to be as hip, modern, clean, and comfortable as CitizenM and Pod Brooklyn. We’ve arranged a group rate, and it’s nice to have everyone under one roof with high speed internet. Here’s the link to the group rate.

  • Thanks to our friend Charlie at citizenM (our go-to for us when we want to be in Manhattan proper), attendees are entitled to a 15% discount when booking through their web site!

  • Thanks to the good folks at Pod Brooklyn (our go-to hotel when we travel to New York City by car) attendees are entitled to a 5% discount - just email us once you’ve signed up, and we’ll send you the code to use when booking through their web site!

NOTES

A detailed itinerary will be supplied approximately two weeks before your workshop starts; venue will be finalized well before that. Stay tuned!

Especially in the age of COVID-19, all of us must agree to adhere strictly to CDC guidelines and to confirm in writing that you are COVID-19 free within two weeks of your arrival. Additional weasel words down below in the section entitled Weasel Words.

Sigh.

With THAT out of the way, it’s useful to note that we start at 3:00PM New York time with an introductory session the first day of each workshop to ease into the schedule (especially since we typically have people coming from all over the world) with a 6:00pm stop time. Start time the the next three days is 9:00AM; stop is 5:00pm on days two and three; with 2:00pm the official close on the last day for those needing travel time.

Since it’s New York, however, we encourage you to arrive early and stay late so that you have time to sample the city on your own!

Lunch will be served on site on days two and three, with plenty of coffee and water.

Group dinner is usually the evening of day two, on us!

Travel & accommodations not included.

We look forward to seeing you!

weasel words (not so bad: “golden rule “stuff)

Sigh. We put these at the bottom not so that you don’t see them, but because no matter how we couch them, the very concepts of “liability” and “cancellation” are anathema to what we’re trying to achieve - and simply haven’t been issues for us thus far. Still, as we mentioned above, especially in the age of COVID-19 it’s important to write that by registering… well, “golden rule” stuff:

1) you won’t hold us liable for injury, illness, theft, damage, or any of the rest of the usual litany of things listed in most legally-crafted clauses like this that we’ve either forgotten or not listed here because life is short and we just don’t want to devote the cycles to thinking about them (once more with feeling: ESPECIALLY COVID-19 or any other kind of disease), but we have to include this as something for which you agree we will not be held responsible); and

2) for our part, irrespective of if/when you have to cancel, we’re always happy to apply your payment to our next street workshop.  If you cancel more than four weeks from start date, we can alternatively issue a full refund less PayPal fees.

But:

  • If you notify us less than four weeks out — AND at least  two days before start date — we can alternatively issue a 50% refund less processing fees.

  • If you notify us less than two days before start date, we can only offer to apply the full payment to our next workshop - no refund.

3) if WE cancel a workshop for any reason (other than fewer registrations than necessary to be economic (how quaint: a year ago we wrote here “we can’t imagine anything than the most horrible of things, so let’s not even go there” and then, BOOM, COVID-19), it’s your choice whether to receive a full refund minus processing fees or simply apply it to our next workshop.
